Using Skeinfish Skeins

You may have heard of a “miraculous” skein that lets you catch garfish without using any hooks...
This skein, called MECIUDA, is trolled at low speed, from a boat or from shore,
and the garfish, mistaking it for a small fish, attack it and get caught by the “beak”.
This fishing technique is used mainly to catch live bait without injuring it; the garfish thus stays lively and active for much longer.

The usual setup for trolling for garfish uses two rods, preferably light ones, one on the right and one on the left, spread as far outwards as possible; the main line must never be thinner than the leader: 0,18-0,25 nylon, depending on how clear or cloudy the water is. The most productive speed is around 3 knots. The lines should be let out 35-50 meters astern. The garfish is also a predator, but it has a bill; like all fish with a bill, it uses this protrusion to strike live prey as it swims, then swallows it once stunned.
Trollers have made use of this behaviour. In practice, when a strike is felt on the line, 2 or 3 meters of line are let out with a wide, quick movement of the rod backwards, so that the bait stops and the garfish, convinced it has hit its target, decides to swallow it.

This lure is simply a series of synthetic filaments that hold the garfish without the need for a hook, making use of the porosity and abrasive surface of this fish’s bill. The skein was a very important innovation for garfish fishing, as it is highly effective and, above all, does not harm the fish because it has no hook. Two or three skeins are mounted on each leader, 40-50 centimetres apart, and that’s all there is to it.
